Oceanside Oasis
Stamford, Connecticut
-
Plantings and hardscape were completely redesigned and rebuilt to achieve a modern landscape with an underlying formal structure.
-
With a spectacular location on Long Island Sound, the landscape plan was designed to showcase unobstructed views to the water.
-
Chinese granite was selected for walkways, stairs and terraces - both for its slightly formal feel and for its superior durability, even under harsh oceanfront weather conditions.
-
Retaining walls and stair risers are constructed of square and rectangular stone, chosen to match the home’s original masonry.
-
The elevation of the lower terrace was carefully designed to meet safety standards without requiring a railing, which would block the panoramic view out to the water.
-
Along the upper terrace, a stainless steel cable and rail system will not corrode in the salty air and minimizes any visual barrier to the view.
-
Low lying flowering shrubs provide seasonal color without blocking views from the terraces or from inside the home.
-
Wrapped in Absolute Black granite, a gas fireplace offers a cozy spot for stargazing or looking out to sea. The fireplace and landscape lighting are controlled from a smartphone app, for ultimate convenience.
-
Stairs were rebuilt to standardize the height of each step. Stainless steel handrails and integrated lighting enhance both the safety and beauty.
-
A custom waterfall feature is integrated almost invisibly into the retaining wall.
-
Surrounded by a broad band of Chinese granite, the spa offers unobstructed views out to the ocean.
-
A second staircase steps down from the grilling terrace to the lower terrace, providing a seamless flow from both sides of the house.
-
Horizontally laid cedar planks give the outdoor shower a beach-y but contemporary aesthetic.
-
The outdoor kitchen features a gas grill and dual ovens, set into a surround of the square and rectangular stone used throughout the project.
-
Two levels of terraces step down to a private beach. A retaining wall and carefully selected plantings protect against erosion.
-
On the upper terrace, a band of granite frames a durable, outdoor-grade ceramic tile with a wood grain design. Laid in a running bond pattern, the tile lends a unique, contemporary feel.
For this stunning waterfront property, Odd Job Landscaping created a modern landscape that perfectly balances formal structure with beach-y ease. Broad walkways and stairs allow for seamless circulation around the home, while two levels of terraces offer ample space for relaxing and entertaining – all with unobstructed, panoramic views out to the water. Features include a spacious outdoor kitchen, a gas firepit surrounded by lounge seating, a spa with a custom waterfall feature, and an outdoor shower. A refined materials palette of Chinese granite, square and rectangular stone, and stainless steel unifies the spaces and provides the durability required by weather conditions on the New England coast.
