Coveside Getaway
Darien, Connecticut
-
A motor court of native stone gravel and plantings of boxwood, hydrangeas and smaller perennials give stately elegance to the front of the home.
-
A Tuuci umbrella shades the patio’s central area. For ultimate convenience, the firepit is connected via hard line to an underground propane tank.
-
A cedar pergola with shade screen shelters the dining area. Lighting is integrated into the pergola and the kitchen’s stone backsplash, so that the space remains fully usable after the sun goes down.
-
Custom retractable screens allow the patio’s tv area to become fully enclosed – perfect for summer movie nights!
-
A deck of white Croatian marble with white cement joints wraps the infinity-edge pool.
-
Along with a built-in spa and custom auto-cover, the pool features an umbrella mounted into the interior sun shelf – making it possible to lounge in the shade while in the pool.
-
Locally made custom benches and plantings of boxwood and knockout roses complete the stunning pool area.
-
The pool’s trough wall and retaining walls throughout the property are constructed of square-and-rectangular linear stone for a contemporary look.
-
A stainless-steel cable and rail system along the edge of the pool deck keeps the area safe without blocking the incredible view.
-
Natural fieldstone pavers give a rustic, natural look to this small seating area with a fire cauldron. A row of arborvitae offers additional privacy.
-
A series of six-inch bluestone steps, lit by stainless-steel LED light posts from Hunza, meander down the hill to the dock.
-
The slope is planted with a variety of shrubs and perennials – including Japanese red maple, liriope, nepeta and hakone grass – carefully selected to provide visual interest year-round.
-
Integrated lighting installed on the cedar dock gives it a beautiful glow when viewed from the house – and makes it safe to walk on in the evening.

With creative thinking and smart design, Odd Job Landscaping turned a challenging site into a spectacular landscape.
Perched at the edge of a secluded cove on Long Island Sound, this property has stunning natural views – and a steeply sloped site. Odd Job Landscaping embraced the challenging topography, taking advantage of a 30-foot elevation change to design a dramatic infinity pool which appears to flow into the cove. Meandering steps of six-inch bluestone, bordered by perennial plantings, lead down to an illuminated dock, and a rustic seating area with a fire cauldron nestles in a rock outcropping. Along the back of the house, a generous patio of full-color bluestone offers space for dining and entertaining. Sheltered beneath a cedar pergola, the outdoor kitchen features a 42-inch Lynx grill with side burner, Green Egg smoker and undercounter refrigerator, all set into cedar cabinetry topped with black Lido marble. Two distinct entertaining zones complete the patio: an open-air seating space with a gas firepit, and a covered outdoor room with a flatscreen TV.
